This link is a journal with many excellent points listed for surviving a Katrina type situation. The author appears to have some expertise and experience. He kept a journal of his ideas and thoughts throughout the Katrina evacuation. At the end of the page is a list of 100 "extremely desirable items" in the event of nearly any disaster.
